Eastern European Coalition for LGBT+ Equality statement regarding war in Ukraine

25 February 2022

The Eastern European Coalition for LGBT+ Equality is outraged by actions conducted by Russia on the territory of Ukraine and the apparent failure of diplomatic resources consolidated to prevent such tragic development of events.

We believe that peace talks have no alternative today and we call on the Russian government to immediately cease all kinds of military actions.

We, the people of eastern Europe have first-hand experiences regarding frustrating effects of war. War is a devastating event for whole region in all aspects of peoples lives. It takes away the most important, sense of peace, which is the main fundament for realizing basic human rights. Every military action conducted today by Russian military forces minimizes the sense of value of a human life, which should be the most valuable asset for humanity. Every hour we receive information regarding loss of civilian’s lives, which is an outrageous violation of all treaties that are in place even for times of war.

War will have devastating and long-term effects on people of Ukraine as well as whole region’s generations to come and after close to 2 years of world pandemic, it will inflict irreparable damage to the economy of the whole region, resulting in even more poverty and hunger.

The answer to Russian aggression should be an unprecedented unity of all countries and consolidation of all diplomatic and humanitarian resources available to cease fire as soon as possible and eliminate the devastating results that Ukrainian people are already facing after few hours of a full-scale war.

We believe that there is no goal that is worth the pain and loss of a full-scale war that we are already witnessing on Ukrainian territory today.

We urge International Organizations, including NATO, UN, OSCE, CoE, EU to use every possible tool at hand to cease-fire and return to peaceful negotiations. We also urge the organizations to consider taking urgent actions to ensure the safety of not only Ukraine, but of all the Countries that are in direct or indirect risk of Russian aggression.

We urge all countries to consolidate forces to ensure maximum accessibility of humanitarian help for everyone who’s in need as a result of this full-scale war.

We urge Russian federation to immediately stop any kind of military actions on Ukrainian territory and take actions towards starting peace-talks!
