Our answer to the government’s threats is courage!

6 June 2024

For months, the ruling party has been threatening us with a law against so-called "LGBT propaganda," while absurdly claiming that their openly discriminatory, homophobic, and transphobic proposals don’t violate human rights.

The full text of the draft law isn’t yet available on Parliament's website, but the details in the document "On Family Values and Protection of Minors" clearly show that, together with the recently passed "Transparency of Foreign Influence" law, this initiative only aims to restrict people’s fundamental rights and strengthen the authoritarian regime of "Georgian Dream."

It’s evident that the ruling party, with its openly anti-democratic and kleptocratic agenda, has never prioritised progressive policies, such as fighting discrimination based on gender or sexuality. Instead, it has consistently targeted queer people, directly or indirectly fueling homophobic and transphobic sentiments. Now, 12 years into their rule and in an election year, they continue to portray LGBT people as a "threat," distracting society from the economic and environmental crises it faces.

This bill will have a restrictive impact on many social and professional groups, but it most severely affects queer people, further worsening their already complex situation.

As the Women's Initiative Support Group, we oppose all bills that strengthen the government’s authoritarian regime, and we stand with the queer community and anyone harmed by these repressive policies. We will fight against discriminatory, anti-democratic, and hateful laws in every possible forum, both locally and internationally.

WISG remains open to support members of the queer community. If you need assistance, please contact us via email or through our hotline.
